Developer appeals on St James’s plan

The developer behind a scheme to build on part of the former St James’s Hospital site has lodged an appeal because its planning application has still not been decided after more than two years.

PJ Livesey has run out of patience with Portsmouth City Council planners and now a government planning inspector will look into why a decision on the £55m scheme for more than 200 homes in the grounds of the redundant NHS psychiatric hospital in Milton has not been made.

A planning application was submitted in early 2020 but only went before councillors in January 2022. Members of the planning committee then deferred making a decision because they wanted more details about it.

Campaigners have voiced considerable opposition to the development, mainly on environmental grounds.

Evidence can be submitted to the appeal until October 25 with the inquiry hearing on November 22.
